Eating Walnuts Daily May Improve Sleep Quality in Young Adults, New Study Suggests
A pioneering study conducted by researchers from the University of Barcelona and published in Food & Function has found that eating a daily serving of walnuts may help improve sleep quality and reduce daytime sleepiness in young adults.
The randomized controlled trial examined the effects of consuming about one handful (40 grams) of walnuts with dinner over an eight-week period. The study included 76 healthy participants aged 20–28, of which 85% were female. The research followed a crossover design where each participant completed both walnut and control phases.
Key Findings of the Study
The study measured several sleep-related biomarkers, including 6-SMT, a metabolite of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Results revealed:
-
Significant increase in melatonin levels in evening urine samples after walnut consumption.
-
Improved overall sleep quality scores, including shorter sleep latency (time taken to fall asleep), fewer awakenings, and better sleep efficiency.
-
Reduced daytime sleepiness, as reported by participants during the walnut intervention period compared to the control period.
Lead researcher Dr. Maria Izquierdo-Pulido stated:
“This is the first randomized controlled trial to demonstrate measurable improvements in objective sleep quality and melatonin levels through daily walnut consumption. These findings highlight walnuts as a potential natural food-based approach to support healthy sleep.”
Why Walnuts May Support Sleep
Walnuts contain a unique combination of sleep-supportive nutrients such as tryptophan (a precursor to melatonin), plant-based melatonin, magnesium, and B vitamins. These nutrients work together to regulate sleep patterns and enhance restfulness.
Co-researcher Dr. María Fernanda Zeron-Rugerio added that while the study showed benefits when walnuts were consumed with dinner, the daily intake rather than timing appeared to be the primary factor behind the improvements.
Public Health Significance
Insufficient sleep has been recognized as a growing global health issue linked to chronic illness, reduced cognitive function, and economic impacts. The findings suggest that simple dietary changes, like incorporating walnuts, may play a role in improving overall sleep health.
